How we compare

There’s more than one
good call to make.

Ooma and Tin Can are compelling choices. Doorman’s idea is a familiar family phone with room for stories, games, and new dialing apps. Here’s how to weigh the differences.

Doorman

A ready-to-use brain and your choice of compatible handset. Separate phone service, optional online plans, and a store of extras in development.

The alternative

The full picture starts with a few numbers.

Fill every cost field with a non-negative amount to see 1-, 3-, and 5-year totals. Zero is fine when a cost doesn’t apply.

USD. Account plans are paid annually; break-even averages them monthly, so it is an estimate rather than a billing date. Include taxes, shipping, handset, activation and any setup costs in upfront amounts; number rental, call usage, E911, fees and electricity in recurring amounts. Ooma’s preset is a Telo only: add a handset if needed. Tin Can’s free Can2Can plan is a different calling scope; choose “another option” to model it. Existing broadband is assumed; add any extra broadband cost. Content purchases, replacements, promotions and price changes are excluded unless you add them to your inputs. More than the monthly price.

Does the cheapest plan mean the cheapest phone?

Hardware, setup, phone-number rental, usage, taxes, fees, and power all affect the total. Doorman’s retail bundle price is not set, so we are not claiming a universal price advantage.

Are the stories and games available today?

No. They are a direction we’re developing, not an existing catalog. We’ll announce actual titles and games when they are ready.

What else should I compare?

Consider whom your child can reach, how contacts are managed, portability around the home, emergency calling, power and internet requirements, support, and what happens if you stop subscribing.
